Project Summary:
We received an urgent request from a Bristol client whom found us via Google - his Shopify website was scheduled to be shut down in two days. The client needed their entire website, including products, customer data, SEO Data, and order history, migrated to a new WooCommerce platform within a week to minimise disruption to their business operations and ensure SEO continuity.
Client’s Request:
“I currently have a Shopify website which I need mirrored to a different host.”
Key Challenges:
- Urgency: The Shopify site would be unavailable in 48 hours, which required rapid action to avoid any downtime & disruption.
- SEO Preservation: Maintaining the SEO structure and ensuring URL integrity was crucial to avoid a drop in organic traffic.
- Minimal Business Disruption: The client wanted to continue selling without any interruptions and retain their existing customer base and order history.
Our Solution:
As a collaborative effort between our business analyst and full stack developer teams, we devised a step-by-step plan to migrate the client’s Shopify site to WooCommerce.
Proposed Strategy:
- Data Export & Backup from Shopify:
- Products, Customers, and Orders: We exported all data as CSV files to ensure all necessary information was safely backed up.
- Images and Files: We used specialised tools to extract all image files and media assets.
- Setting Up the New WooCommerce Environment:
- Created a staging environment on our hosting server to set up WordPress and WooCommerce.
- Installed the WooCommerce plugins to match Shopify functionalities.
- Automated Migration Using Tools:
- Implemented migration tools such as Cart2Cart and LitExtension to automate the transfer of products, categories, customer data, and order history.
- Rechecked and manually adjusted product variations and attributes to match WooCommerce standards.
- Recreation of Pages & Content:
- Transferred and restructured static pages such as About, Contact, and Blog posts.
- Used a page builder to design the pages in a manner similar to the original Shopify site.
- Theme and Design Customisation:
- Recreated the original Shopify theme to match the WooCommerce design.
- Customised the theme using Elementor to ensure the look and feel remained consistent.
- Configuring Payment & Shipping Methods:
- Set up payment gateways: PayPal, Stripe and Apple Pay.
- Reconfigured shipping methods to mirror the options available on Shopify.
- SEO & URL Structure:
- Maintained the same URL structure using Permalink Manager and set up 301 redirects for any unmatched URLs.
- Installed Yoast SEO to ensure the new site’s SEO was in line with Shopify’s.
- Testing & Launch:
- Conducted thorough testing of the website to verify the data integrity, ensure smooth payment processing, and confirm mobile responsiveness.
- Successfully launched the WooCommerce site with no loss in functionality or SEO rankings.
Results & Impact:
Within a week, the client’s Shopify website was successfully mirrored onto a WooCommerce platform with minimal disruption to their business.
The SEO continuity was preserved, ensuring no loss in traffic or sales. The client could continue business operations with minimal disruptions, and the transition was smooth and efficient, aligning perfectly with their tight timeline.
